The Hunger Bowl is the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia’s annual competitive food drive. Teams from across the 14 counties we serve compete to bring in the most donations to support us in our fight against food insecurity. Teams can choose to collect food donations or raise money through our Virtual Food Drive and Venmo, or do a combination of both!

How Do I Start a Team?

1)  If you plan on collecting food donations, let us know how many barrels you need for collection in the signup form. Barrels can be picked up from the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia starting October 19th. Teams who will only collect cash or virtual donations do not need to pick up barrels.
2)  We will send registered teams a link to their Virtual Food Drive page. This link can be shared and ensures teams get credit for their online donations.
3)  Join us for our Zoom kickoff on November 2 at 9 a.m.! Zoom links will be sent out to teams prior to the start date.
4)  Gather donations! Teams can gather food (collected in barrels), cash donations (collected alongside food), and virtual donations (via Virtual Food Drive or Venmo) from November 2 through November 16.
5)  All food and cash donations must be brought to the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia by 3pm on November 16.

Competition Rules

1)  Donated items cannot be damaged or be past the printed expiration date.
2)  The Food Bank of Northeast Georgia will not pick up donations unless they weigh over 500 pounds. All donations under 500 pounds must be brought by teams to the Food Bank.
3)  Teams are divided into categories: Northeast Georgia, Rabun County, and University of Georgia. Categories are divided by size: Small, Medium, and Large. Winners come from each subdivision.
4)  Scores are calculated as pounds per person on the team.

How Does a Virtual Food Drive Work?

1)  Each registered team will receive a link to a Virtual Food Drive page specific to their team. This link can be shared with donors, who can make donations through the site. Teams will receive credit for all donations made through their link.
2)  Virtual and monetary donations are highly encouraged as the Food Bank can purchase up to 5 pounds of food for $1, allowing monetary donations to go further in combating food insecurity in our community than in-kind donations.

How Does Venmo Work?

1)  Donations can also be made through Venmo to @FoodBankNEGA. For teams to receive credit for Venmo donations, donors must include ‘Hunger Bowl’ and the team’s name in the message area. If donors would like an acknowledgement/receipt, they must also provide a mailing address in the message area.
2)  Virtual and monetary donations are highly encouraged as the Food Bank can purchase up to 5 pounds of food for $1, allowing monetary donations to go further in combating food insecurity in our community than in-kind donations.
3)  Teams can receive updates on their donations by contacting Hungerbowl@foodbanknega.org
